About my ride

Hi, my name is Richard and, during 2015, I plan to cycle to all 100 Micropubs in the UK.

Micropubs Visited so far (14th November 2015):  100
Miles Cycled so far: 2219

Micropubs are a recent phenomenon.  The Micropub Association website describes a micropub as:
“A small freehouse which listens to its customers, mainly serves cask ales, promotes conversation, shuns all forms of electronic entertainment and dabbles in traditional pub snacks”.

If you like good beer and good cheer then you’ll love micropubs!

Shortly before the end of 2014, the Micropub Association announced that the 100th Micropub had opened.  At that point I resolved to visit them all – by bike.

I expect the total cycling distance to be around 2000 miles, the equivalent of Lands End to John o Groats and back!  Micropubs are everywhere, from Kent to Devon, to Wales to Berwick upon Tweed, and all kinds of places in between!

I have a job and a family life, so I will be undertaking the journey in stages, throughout the year.   Doing it this way will also make it more practical for friends and family to join me for sections of the ride.

I will be raising money for the Alzheimers Society in memory of my father who, like many others, suffered from this cruel condition in his later years.  I truly believe that the causes of dementia can and will be cracked.  In the meantime, the Alzheimers Society are fighting on two fronts:  Supporting research into identifying the causes of the condition and potential cures, and providing care and support for those suffering from the condition and, equally importantly, their families and carers.

For my latest updates from the road, you can also follow my Facebook page by going to www.facebook.com/MicropubBikeRide and clicking on “Like”.

This website is two blogs in one:  Posts with category of “Bike Rides” are about my journey and include summaries of the micropubs I have visited on those days.  But I will eventually also review each micropub in greater detail – those posts have a category of “Micropub Reviews”.   If you’re interested in one or the other then you can filter the site by category.

If you’re looking for a specific micropub then try typing the name of a pub or the name of a town into the Search box.

And if you would like to receive an email each time I add new posts to this blog then enter your email address in to the email sign-up box.

You can look at hundreds more photo’s of my ride and the micropubs I have visited, in chronological order, in my Flickr album.

Hi Richard: Hope to see you at Petts Wood on Saturday afternoon. Later in the year include The Broken Drum at Blackfen when you visit Welling and Eltham.

Hi John, yeah I’m hoping to include The Broken Drum on my last day, especially with the Terry Pratchett / Alzheimers link. It just doesn’t appear on that list cos it’s not on my “official” list of the first 100 micropubs. Cheers, Richard

Hi Nick, the Barrel Drop is not on my “official” list (nor is Beer Dock”) as they opened after I started, but will try and pay them a visit if time permits on the day. So many micropubs, so little time (!)
